By Paul Campbell, Commercial Agent & Practicing Attorney | Goldmark Commercial Real Estate

When people ask me how I ended up in commercial real estate, the answer usually starts long before law school or brokerage.

It starts on the farm.

Growing up in an agricultural environment teaches you a few things early on. You learn the value of hard work, the importance of patience, and how to think long-term. Farming is not about quick wins. It’s about making decisions today that will pay off years down the road.

That mindset has shaped how I approach commercial real estate in ways I probably didn’t fully appreciate at the time.

Real Estate Is About the Long Game

In farming, you are constantly making decisions without immediate results. You plant in the spring, but you don’t see the outcome until months later. Even then, the results depend on factors outside your control.

Commercial real estate works in a similar way.

Whether it’s buying land, leasing space, or developing a property, the best decisions are often the ones made with a long-term perspective. It’s not just about where the market is today. It’s about where it’s going and how a property fits into that future.

Understanding Land at a Different Level

Having a background in agriculture also gives you a different appreciation for land.

It’s not just a parcel on a map. It’s something with opportunities, challenges, and a story behind it. Whether it’s farmland, development land, or a commercial site, understanding how land is used and how it can evolve is a big part of what we do.

That perspective carries over into helping Clients evaluate opportunities, especially when it comes to land acquisition and development.

Relationships Still Matter Most

Farming communities are built on relationships.

Neighbors help neighbors. People do business with those they trust. That same principle applies directly to commercial real estate, especially in a market like Fargo-Moorhead.

Over the years, I’ve found that the strongest deals and the best outcomes come from strong relationships. Whether I’m working with landowners, investors, or business owners, trust is always at the center of it.

Blending Law, Real Estate, and Experience

My path into commercial real estate also includes my work as an attorney. That background gives me a different lens when it comes to contracts, negotiations, and structuring deals.

Combined with my upbringing, it allows me to approach transactions with both a practical and strategic mindset. It’s about understanding the details while also keeping the bigger picture in focus.

Why I Love This Business

At the end of the day, what I enjoy most about commercial real estate is the impact it has.

Every deal represents something bigger. A business expanding. A piece of land being put to use. An investment that supports long-term growth.

It’s a dynamic, relationship-driven business where no two days are the same, but the core principles remain consistent.

Work hard. Think long-term. Do right by people.

What This Means for Clients

If there’s one thing my background has taught me, it’s that the best decisions are grounded in both experience and perspective.

Whether you are buying, selling, or evaluating land, it helps to work with someone who understands not just the transaction, but the broader context behind it.

That’s what I aim to bring to every Client relationship.
